Over the past eight years, Water Works Engineers has provided assistance to the City of Shasta Lake in upgrading/improving their wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Limitations on discharge credits for the nearby Churn Creek limited the number of new connections and caused permit compliance issues with the existing discharge point. To address this issue, WaterWorks developed the Effluent Disposal Plan to compare multiple options to create a solution for the City. The plan included a comprehensive pipeline routing study, preliminary design, and a cost-to-benefit analysis for various options. In addition, WaterWorks completed several additional studies to assist the City in moving towards permit compliance and work to allow more connections. The final design achieved year-round “end of pipe” discharge to Churn Creek through upgrades to the headworks, equalization, aeration basins, RAS/WAS pump station, secondary clarifiers, cloth filters, UV, sludge handling facilities, electrical, and programming systems.

This project took many years to complete due to its complexity but provided a long-term solution for the City. The project received the 2019 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sacramento Section Outstanding Water/Wastewater Treatment Project of the Year. This was a tremendous accomplishment for the project team and City.
